OK, Blog-lo-dytes! It's Friday again, and Here's What I Think About That.....
Juve v Barca in Champions League Final. HWITAT: I think Juve will win. I know, I know, Barca has Messi and Suarez and Neymar; but if the old adage "Defense wins Championships" holds true, then Juve will win. They have the better GK and central defenders.
BB King died yesterday. HWITAT: As Phil Schoen tweeted out "The Thrill is Gone". Classic, and 'nuf said.
New York Red Bull is on top, New York city FC is on bottom. HWITAT: You have to tip your hat to an organization that fired the Coach who had led them to the best finish in franchise history; and now are on top of the League. I detest the fact that Ali Curtis fired Mike Petky...but so far, it seems to be working. Jason Kreis is on the 'hot seat' already--only 8 games into the season. That doesn't seem fair or right--NYCFC is an expansion team after all. They're supposed to suck.
LA Galaxy is floundering. HWITAT: The season is only 8 games old. Bruce Arena is arguably the best coach the US has produced to date. LA Galaxy will be in the Final this year.
Steven Gerrard finishes his Liverpool playing days this weekend. HWITAT: He has been the embodiment of Liverpool. He is heading to MLS. Thanks for the memories, and we look forward to seeing you in LA, Mr Gerrard.
We have created a wonderful soccer fan base here in the US. HWITAT: For years (the past 30 years) we in soccer have said, "just wait....Soccer will be big-time in 30 years". Well, sort of. We have created a great fan base. MLS has solid fan followings, our National Teams have tremendous fan support. However, we are still aways away from creating top-level players. Until soccer players can make close to professional athlete salaries in the USA, we will lag behind the world in the number of top-level players, and therefore our domestic leagues will lag behind the world in on-the-field-soccer-product.
It's Youth club Try-out season, and that means it's Silly Season. HWITAT: Parents need to back-off on the moronic/demonic involvement in your kids' soccer Club and development. Enough. Let the kids play. Lets the coaches coach and develop. Let the referees ref. Love your kids and support them. Your kids are NOT pros. Quit acting like they are.
May the ground beneath your dive be soft. May the other team shoot right at you. May your goalposts be 3 feet wide.
All the Best--EV
