Well, it's another year, and Hope Solo--US National Women's GK--has been suspended by US Soccer for 30 days.
A new year and Hope Solo is in trouble.........again.
How many times have we heard in our society, and maybe even in our Sport; "So and so is a great player, but...."
Here's the thing. Ask any player at any level who has finished playing, and they will tell you that the older they get, the more they miss playing. As the years go by, playing memories become galvanized--and they are, for the most part, GREAT memories. So why would anyone do anything to jeopardize a playing career? It's a good question. Hope Solo is a fine GK. She is a GK who at 33 years old should be at the top of her game--and probably is--but she might not be there come Canada 2015. And that would be a shame. However, it would be more of a shame if she is not able to get her life in order and learn to stay away from the outside stuff (read 'baggage') that seems to constantly bring her down. Good luck to you, Hope. We are pulling for you to get things sorted out in your life.
We had a great showing at the NSCAA convention in Philadelphia last weekend. Lots of old friends stopped by the booth, and it is always great to watch GKs see the latest in GK technology and see their reactions to our new product offering. If you ever get a chance, plan to attend a future NSCAA Convention--usually held in the 3rd week of January--in Baltimore next year, and LA the following year.
MLS is rapidly approaching the end of the CBA with their player's union (end of the month). On the table--among other things--is the issue of free-agency. The players say they are willing to strike for free-agency, and they should be. MLS is far enough along that free agency should be allowed, and rank-and-file members of the players union (read 'average player') should have a minimum wage of at least $120K. MLS management will, or course, cry 'foul' and 'poverty'; but the time has come to take large steps toward becoming a 'big league'. After all, if you can pay Jozy Altidore 6 million dollars, (Whaaaaaaaaaat?!?) you can pay the average player in the league at least $120K. By the way, $6 million for a forward that scored 1 goal at Sunderland? Total ass-clown move by Toronto FC and MLS.
Headed up to OH this weekend for a GK Training weekend. Should be great fun. Talk tomorrow.
May the ground beneath your dive be soft. May the other team always shoot right at you. May your goalposts be 3 feet wide.
All the Best--EV
