OK, so in looking at some of the soccer/football news from around the globe...here are some observations and maybe a few opinions:
We came in 4th. We lost on penalties to Panama in the Gold Cup, thereby securing our 4th place finish. Yea! We're number 4! We're number 4! Really?!? Really Jurgen?!? Really Sunil?!? Number 4?
Mexico finds it's mojo and crushes the ReggaeBoyz 3-1 in the Gold Cup Final. A fitting result. Mexico was about 2 goals better, I thought. Good job by Jamaica, and good job by Ryan Thompson--reserve GK thrust into the limelight and performing admirably. (Reusch Guy, too!)"
Man United signs Sergio Romero. Remember Sergio Romero? He was the Argentina GK who played so well in the 2014 World Cup. Remember his story? Reserve GK at Valencia, couldn't get a game. Leads Argentina to WC Final. Take heed all of you "#2" Goalkeepers out there.....I have long said that the #2 GK is the most important player on the team. For an example, see 'Ryan Thompson story' and 'Sergio Romero story'.
Chicago Fire sell rights to Didier Drogba and pick up Gilberto and some cash. Smart move by the Fire, and an indication that MLS is truly beginning to become a professional league. The Fire made a business decision versus an 'entertainment' decision. Sure, Drogba would have had a "new guy" bump in ticket sales, but in the long run, the Fire are going nowhere this year, and most likely have begun the re-tooling process for the future. Of course, that deal could have--quite possibly could have--all been orchestrated by MLS in order to get Drogba to a French-speaking province (i.e.; Montreal) which will help sell tickets. I prefer to think/hope-for the former scenario.
Carli Lloyd is pissed-off by the way she was treated in the NWSL. Traded last October for 2 players, Lloyd was sent to the Houston Dash. Last night she scored against her old team, the Western New York Flash, and accused them (the Flash) of not treating her with respect in the trade. OK. Carli, if you want to be a professional, and be treated like a professional--you get traded in professional sports. That happens. And the team doesn't call you and ask your opinion about getting traded UNLESS you have a no-trade clause in your contract. Growing pains of being a fledgling professional league.
Pirlo stepped on yesterday for NYCFC in a 5-3 win vs Orlando City. 8 goals in a professional match.....COOL! 8 goals is entertaining. Regardless of your soccer/football purist beliefs, 8 goals in a match is great! Pirlo is a legend already.
OK, let me know YOUR opinions!
May the ground beneath your dive be soft. May the other team shoot everything right at you. May your goalposts be 3 feet wide.
